Our council is made up of dedicated, safety-conscious professionals who are passionate about using their expertise to help students feel safer and more supported in their daily lives.

Kul Mahay

Kul Mahay is a former senior Police Commander with over 40 years of leadership experience. Within the police service, he managed complex, major investigations, commanded major and critical incidents, as leading across a wide variety of organisational roles.

Over the past decade, he has developed extensive experience in culture transformation, leadership development, executive coaching, conflict resolution, executive team development, HR transformation, and working with large and small organisations across all sectors. His development work has predominantly involved working with executive teams and supporting transformative work.

He has previously held the position of Chair of Trustees for a charity dedicated to eliminating so-called honour-based abuse from society. Kul has worked extensively across the further education sector and with his leadership consultancy work and is committed to creating safety for young students across the UK.

Monica Ghuman

Monica Ghuman is a recent graduate of Nottingham Trent University, achieving a First Class Honours in BA (Hons) Business Management and Entrepreneurship. After living in Scottsdale, Arizona for ten years and completing her first year at Arizona State University, she transferred directly into her second year at Nottingham Trent University. This transition brought the dual challenge of adapting to a new academic environment and moving to a new country. It was during this period that Monica became acutely aware of the differences in how crime, violence, and student safety are understood and addressed across cultures.

Having lived in both the UK and the USA, Monica’s international background shapes her approach to student safety today. As the Project Lead for the Student Safety App, she oversees marketing, outreach, and PR strategies designed to empower students across higher and further education to confidently speak up and report their concerns. Her work focuses on building trust, amplifying student voices, and strengthening safety across campuses.

Monica is driven not only by a commitment to creating safer student environments, but also by a passion for inspiring students and recent graduates. She champions the belief that anything is possible, regardless of age, background, or experience level, and strives to challenge the stigma that young graduates are inexperienced or unprepared for leadership roles.

Preethi Kang

Preethi Kang is a business, marketing, and sales leader with over a decade of experience working with both multinationals and SMEs across engineering, manufacturing, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics markets. She is passionate about helping organisations strengthen their market position, grow commercial performance, and build meaningful customer relationships.

In her current role as Commercial Manager at Qinesis, Preethi focuses on developing strategic growth initiatives, leading commercial development, and collaborating with clients to solve business challenges and unlock opportunities in competitive markets. She brings a unique blend of practical commercial insight, marketing expertise, and a solution-focused mindset to every project she undertakes.

Preethi is also actively involved in supporting the next generation of talent across the East Midlands. She serves as Chair and Board Champion for Generation Next, the East Midlands Chamber network for young professionals aged 18–35, where she champions professional development, networking, and growth for emerging leaders across industries.

With a strong combination of commercial insight, marketing expertise, and a solution-focused approach, Preethi brings energy, vision, and practical solutions to every initiative she leads. Committed to delivering business results while fostering community impact and empowering the next generation of leaders, she is driven by lifelong learning and continually develops her skills and leadership capabilities, with a focus on strategy, commercial excellence, and community-centred business growth.

Lisa Murray

Currently as Custody Chief Inspector I provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of Nottinghamshire police custody suites, ensuring the safe, lawful, and effective detention and care of detainees and Custody users.

I am accountable for upholding high professional standards, ensuring staff wellbeing and safety, maintaining zero tolerance of discrimination, and driving a culture of fairness, dignity, and respect. My role ensures custody contributes positively to wider policing priorities, victim outcomes, and public confidence.

Sir Richrd FitzHerbert

Sir Richard FitzHerbert is the High Sheriff of Derbyshire for 2025/26. A role that stretches back over 1000 years. Nowadays the role supports the Judiciary, the forces of Law & Order and the Emergency Services as well as supporting charitable causes and organisations around the County. Sir Richard is the 7th member of his family to take on the role and is chair of the Derbyshire Tourist Board advocating all that is good in the County.

Head of Nottingham City Council Security, Brian is a results-driven Senior Manager with a strong track record in technical problem-solving and root cause analysis.

As the General Counsel for Octavian Security, James is a highly knowledgeable and respected professional, deeply committed to enhancing safety both on and off campus.

Halima Ahcene Djaballah

Lead Journalist of the Midlands Gazette and a former student at NTU, Halima is passionate about promoting the safety and welfare of students.

Thanh Catachanas

Director at JC Decaux UK, Thanh is a strong female representative who is extremely determined to improve the life of students on and off campus in any way she can.

Emile Heskey

Former professional footballer and now Director of Octavian Security, Emile brings passion and commitment to promoting student safety.

Ninder Johal

Ninder sits on the board of the West Midlands Growth Company. As Vice-Chair of Sandwell College and Governor at the University of Wolverhampton, he is passionate about education and committed to student safety.

Thalej Vasishta

As CEO and Senior Solicitor of Paragon Law Ltd, Thal Vasishta brings valuable expertise and is committed to supporting student safety.

Stuart Croy

Stuart is the Head of Security at the University of Nottingham and is unwavering in his dedication to safeguarding students, drawing on his extensive experience to create a secure and supportive campus environment.

Ameer Shamz

As Head of Security at the University of Derby, Ameer Shamz is dedicated to protecting students, using his extensive expertise to foster a safe and supportive campus atmosphere.
